Which is better, the city or suburbia?

Big question, the city or suburbia. Growing up on Long Island, I was completely submerged in suburbia. I loved the 20 minute drive it took to get everywhere, the clusters of neighborhoods, and the slight competition between towns and school districts. There was always a park or beach nearby and the Hamptons seemed like wonderful forbidden grounds. I’d go into New York City a few times a year — for a Yankee game or broadway play — but it was still quite unknown to me as I grew up.

My understanding of the city was:

  • Gigantic skyscrapers
  • A couple bridges
  • Lots of traffic
  • Lots of bustling people

It wasn’t until I was going to undergrad that I wanted to explore city life more intensely. Having gone to Georgetown in Washington D.C., I was immediately struck by the small old fashioned town meshing directly with downtown D.C.

My initial views of Georgetown were:

  • Small narrow cobblestone streets
  • Colorful townhouses
  • Quaint independent shops

And of downtown D.C.:

  • Reckless drivers who drive in two lanes at once
  • Marvelous museums and monuments
  • Beautiful landscape to walk around

I got curious about other cities and started traveling to as many as I could. My favorite thing about traveling to different cities is seeing the sliver of overlapping qualities, but the significant difference in culture and vibe. I’ve always loved all the possibilities and adventures that come from cities. They’re so fun to explore.

My initial thoughts of Philly:

  • I was overwhelmed by the number of trees, it was glorious
  • Beautiful skyline from across the river
  • Unfortunate proximity to NJ lol

My thoughts of Chicago:

My thoughts of Boston:

  • It’s my all time favorite city (hence why I live here!)
  • Hot take but the t is actually amazing — you can get downtown or to the outer suburbs so quickly
  • The sports culture and spirit is unmatched
  • The number of independent bookstores, shops and restaurants is incredible

In relation to the suburbs, I used to think cities were completely separate and distinct. Yes, living in Boston I hear and am unfazed by the train bells, honking cars, and endless flow of traffic. But when I visited my childhood home, I was surprised by the sounds of lawn mowers, neighbors chatting outside, and trees swaying in the wind. I hadn’t truly appreciated the unique sounds each environment has to offer and it was quite eye-opening. There were some overlapping qualities, however: daffodils, wild bunnies, and dog walkers. And I will forever love the Long Island beaches.

So which is better, the city or suburbia? I’m in a stage of my life where I don’t prefer one or the other. I love the suburbs and the city for different reasons and have grown to appreciate what they each offer. I know that’s why I love Boston so much — it’s the perfect mix of both.

Cheers to exploring new cities and neighborhoods!
